The Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel engine is known for its advanced design and engineering. It is built from aluminum, with steel sleeves lining the piston pathways.
This configuration provides a lightweight yet durable structure that offers balanced performance throughout the engine’s speed range. Key specifications include:
- Capacity: 1997 cc / 2.0 l
- Cylinders: Inline 4-cylinder
- Turbocharged: Yes
- Direct Fuel Injection: Yes
- Performance: 180 horsepower (hp)
- Maximum Torque: 430 Newton-meters (Nm)
- Materials: Aluminum block and cylinder head
To ensure smooth operation with minimal noise and vibration, the crankshaft is linked to two balancer shafts via gears, which rotate on roller bearings. This setup helps to maintain stability even at high speeds. The engine’s accessory belt is located at the front, while the timing chain is positioned at the rear, providing quieter operation but requiring the engine to be dismantled to replace the chain, an operation that takes about 10 hours.
Ingenium engine: Common Issues
Despite its innovative design, the Ingenium 2.0 diesel engine has faced several issues reported by owners. While many users value its efficiency, they often encounter several common problems, including:
- Timing Chain Noises: The timing chain in some JLR vehicles manufactured before 2019 has been prone to elongation, producing a rattling noise when the chain tensioner fails to accommodate this elongation. Early models faced damage to the lower chain and tensioner, prompting JLR to make improvements starting with chassis ending in HA067640. Further updates were made to the upper shaft tensioner and upper chain for chassis ending in LA643242. Despite these issues, JLR does not recommend a timing chain replacement in its maintenance manual.
- Crankshaft Balancer Shaft problems: The Ingenium engine utilizes two crankshaft balancer shafts with roller bearings. Damage to these bearings has been reported, prompting JLR to introduce modifications starting with chassis numbers ending in LA643645
- Oil leaks: Customers have reported oil leaks from seals, particularly around the timing chain side of the crankshaft. JLR addressed this issue by modifying the crankshaft seal design for chassis ending in LA643645.
- Turbo failures and coolant leaks: Other issues include turbocharger failures and coolant leaks, both of which can lead to significant repair costs if not addressed promptly.
